Scholars working around Volkhonka face steady gallery crowds opposite Cathedral of Christ the Saviour instead of quiet residential streets.
The institution stands on Volkhonka street directly across from Cathedral of Christ the Saviour as the largest collection of European art in Moscow. Permanent galleries display French impressionist canvases and modern canvases that rejoined the collection after storage in Saint Petersburg. The museum also hosts the annual Sviatoslav Richter December Nights festival and formerly staged the joint Moscow-Paris exhibition.
Archival provenance remains an active issue inside the building, where art historians identified Italian Renaissance sculptures missing from Berlin collections since wartime. Long-term researchers also face administrative disruption within the department hierarchy. Museum officials, including deputy directors, resigned from their posts to protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
