À propos du lieu

Templo Mayor formed the ceremonial core of the Mexica capital.

The pyramid dominated the sacred precinct of Tenōchtitlan during the Postclassic era. Known in Nahuatl as Huēyi Teōcalli, the complex housed paired shrines at the summit, reached by separated flights of stone stairs. Mexica builders dedicated a sanctuary to Huītzilōpōchtli for warfare and an adjoining sanctuary to Tlāloc for rain and harvest. A central spire honored Quetzalcōātl in the wind aspect of Ehēcatl.

Rulers repeatedly expanded the temple over older layers, completing a massive enlargement under Moctezuma before Spanish forces dismantled the structure during the colonial conquest. Spanish authorities erected the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral directly over the demolished site. Modern streets now run across the edge of the exposed foundations, where ongoing preservation keeps archaeological trenches open beside active roadways.
