Fukuromachi Elementary School Peace Museum: ce qu’il y a autour, comment y aller et quand venir · 2026

Residents in Naka-ku live beside an active elementary school that preserves chalk messages written on blackened plaster during post-strike relief.

Carte des lieux
À propos du lieu

Preserved schoolhouse walls carry chalk messages written during post-strike search efforts.

The museum occupies the preserved reinforced concrete wing and basement of an active municipal elementary school in Naka-ku. Built originally on temple grounds before moving to its present ward, the structure stood among the closest academic buildings to the atomic blast hypocenter. Damaged masonry was repurposed as an emergency relief station where survivors inscribed inquiries for missing relatives directly onto scorched plaster.

Classes resumed shortly after the war in makeshift quarters while reconstruction proceeded across several phases. Modern educational wings were subsequently erected beside the preserved historic core, allowing the complex to function simultaneously as an open civic memorial and an operating school. Long-term residents experience this dual reality daily, sharing the perimeter with enrolled pupils and international researchers.
