Palazzo Leoni, Bologna: ce qu’il y a autour, comment y aller et quand venir · 2026

Scholars working near San Martino conduct their daily research under late Renaissance fresco cycles rather than conventional office lighting.

À propos du lieu

Palazzo Leoni preserves Mannerist interior decoration across ceremonial salons once occupied by Bolognese academic societies and regional preservation offices.

Girolamo Leoni commissioned the Renaissance palace on land secured by his brother Camillo Leoni Nordoli. The family engaged decorators to cover the reception halls in Mannerist cycles, though archival records leave the primary architect uncertain between Antonio Morandi and Gerolamo da Treviso. Facing the church of San Martino, the urban residence established a major aristocratic presence within the historic core of Bologna.

Followers of Nicolò dell’Abate decorated the main piano nobile salons with narrative scenes taken from the Iliad and the Aeneid. Vincenzo Leoni directed this mythological program while presiding over the Accademia degli Ardenti. The upper salon subsequently hosted gatherings and theatrical stagings for the Accademia dei Ravvivati, turning private domestic quarters into an enduring forum for local academic and literary debate.

Ownership shifted to Count Pier Paolo Malvezzi Locatelli after the original male family line ended, connecting the estate to Cardinal Vincenzo Malvezzi Locatelli and the Accademia Filarmonica. Later tenures by Giuseppe Sedazzi, the Marchesini family, and the Collegio di Spagna culminated in institutional use as a regional cultural heritage library, preserving the historic complex for visiting researchers.
