Residents based near the palace navigate working metropolitan offices and museum crowds sharing the same Renaissance courtyards.
Cosimo de' Medici began construction after consolidating authority following the defeat of Milanese forces. Unlike peer families that built upon existing holdings, Cosimo cleared adjacent plots to erect a fresh residence. Strict sumptuary laws limited public displays of wealth, prompting a modest exterior that concealed decorated domestic quarters. Political rivals still claimed Medici domestic construction relied on misappropriated funds.
The palace served as the primary Medici seat until ducal operations relocated to Palazzo Vecchio. Subsequent generations deemed the architecture too austere, leading to a sale to the Riccardi family. The new owners commissioned Luca Giordano to paint the Apotheosis of the Medici across gallery ceilings. The property later passed to the Tuscan state and houses the Metropolitan City administration alongside public museum galleries.
