Hospital of Innocents anchors a quiet corner of the historic center, where long-term tenants trade supermarket access for mornings under the arches before museum visitors arrive.
Filippo Brunelleschi designed the complex as a foundling hospital facing Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. The street facade features an open arcade resting on slender composite columns, decorated with glazed ceramic roundels of swaddled infants. Inside, the institution operated nursery rooms, workshops, cloisters, and residential dormitories to care for abandoned infants until adulthood.
Today the facility maintains an active museum, research centers, and social archives documenting childhood care. Temporary workers and students living nearby find that the quiet square turns into an active university zone during daytime lectures. Narrow sidewalks and strict building conservation rules limit local grocery shops, requiring residents to run domestic errands further toward the central market.
