église de Toutes-les-Nations: ce qu’il y a autour, comment y aller et quand venir · 2026

Researchers basing themselves along the Mount of Olives trade residential quiet for continuous waves of pilgrims arriving at the Gethsemane sanctuary.

À propos du lieu

The Basilica of the Agony encloses bedrock beside Gethsemane where Christian tradition marks the prayer of Jesus before arrest.

The Catholic sanctuary stands on the Mount of Olives adjacent to the Garden of Gethsemane, enclosing the natural rock associated with the vigil before the arrest of Jesus. Known also as the Church of Gethsemane, the modern basilica rests directly above older ruins. An earthquake ruined an earlier Byzantine basilica on the grounds, followed by a Crusader chapel that was abandoned before modern reconstruction.

Excavations beneath the floor uncovered an ancient column and mosaic fragments, prompting architects to revise the basilica design to preserve previous layers. Tunnel construction later revealed an ancient ritual bath, or mikveh, beneath the Byzantine sanctuary, confirming immersion practices on the slope. Greek floor inscriptions request remembrance for devotees of Christ, while the Custody of the Holy Land protects the property.
