Mur des Lamentations Plaza: ce qu’il y a autour, comment y aller et quand venir · 2026

Residents beside Western Wall Plaza navigate regular holiday assemblies and tense security cordons around the Mughrabi ramp instead of quiet neighborhood streets.

Carte des lieux
À propos du lieu

Western Wall Plaza functions as an open stone esplanade beside the ancient retaining wall of the Temple Mount.

The paved expanse occupies ground that previously held the historic Mughrabi Quarter, established under the dynasty of Saladin. Multiple diplomatic and private efforts to purchase the district for Jewish worship failed during Ottoman and British rule. Israeli authorities cleared the neighborhood directly after seizing the Old City, demolishing residential houses and the Sheikh Eid Mosque to make room for mass pilgrimage gatherings.

Today the open stone esplanade accommodates vast assemblies of worshipers beside the Western Wall while remaining exposed to political friction. Overhead, the Mughrabi ramp stands as the surviving structure from the demolished quarter, leading to the Mughrabi Gate and the Temple Mount above. Clashes have repeatedly affected the site, including episodes where stones were thrown down from the al-Aqsa Mosque onto congregants below.
