The Catholic sanctuary stands on the Mount of Olives adjacent to the Garden of Gethsemane, enclosing the natural rock associated with the vigil before the arrest of Jesus. An earthquake ruined an earlier Byzantine basilica on the grounds, followed by a Crusader chapel that was abandoned before modern reconstruction.
