Tenants settling in Andheri share their immediate neighbourhood with a prehistoric volcanic monolith that rises straight out of the dense suburban sprawl.
The monolith formed when volcanic lava erupted through fissures in the earth during the Mesozoic Era and cooled into vertical basalt columns. Similar geological formations exist at Devils Tower in Wyoming and Devils Postpile in California. The surrounding ridge once extended into neighbouring Jogeshwari before industrial quarrying destroyed those adjacent formations, leaving this solitary pillar as the sole surviving remnant.
Municipal authorities designated the column as a protected heritage structure following sustained petitions by geologists, which banned quarrying operations on the site. The Central Government earlier classified the land as a National Park under the Forest Act. Despite legal safeguards against adjacent industrial activity, the sheer rock faces suffer from persistent natural erosion.
