À propos du lieu

Portuguese colonial builders fortified the headland to guard coastal approaches.

The fort stands at Land's End in Bandra, originally named Forte de Bandorá by Portuguese military engineers. The complex provided a freshwater spring for coastal ships, which gave the site its name. From its tiered ramparts rising above the Arabian Sea, sentries monitored Mahim Bay, Worli, and the northern entrance channel. The garrison maintained artillery batteries to secure maritime routes around the northern islands.

Control of the headland shifted across imperial conflicts. British forces partially dismantled the defensive walls to prevent Maratha forces from using the stronghold against Bombay. The Marathas later captured the position before British authorities regained control. The surrounding land eventually passed to Parsi philanthropist Byramjee Jeejeebhoy, and the site became a backdrop for Hindi film productions.
