À propos du lieu

Rising from Bebelplatz, the domed cathedral represents the return of Catholic public architecture to Prussia after the Reformation.

Local parishioners petitioned Frederick the Great to permit the building, and the crown provided the construction site. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff based his circular design on the Roman Pantheon, though financial shortages repeatedly stalled progress before Bishop Ignacy Krasicki finally consecrated the altar. The completed rotunda established a formal Catholic presence in the Prussian capital.

During the Nazi era, cathedral canon Bernhard Lichtenberg held public evening prayers for persecuted Jewish citizens, enduring imprisonment and death before his relics were entombed below the nave. Allied air raids burned the interior down to the bare exterior walls. Rebuilt under East German administration, the structure underwent a modern redesign that added an upper sanctuary and an altar crafted from diocesan stones.
