Lorenz Adlon established the property on Pariser Platz after persuading Kaiser Wilhelm to facilitate the clearance of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Palais Redern. Architects Carl Gause and Robert Leibnitz created a structure equipped with private electrical generators, running hot water, and an on-site laundry. Public areas featured marble columns, an elephant fountain in the interior garden, and Neo-Baroque reception halls.

Because the imperial palace draftiness troubled the monarch, the German emperor reserved permanent private suites on the boulevard.
