À propos du lieu

A neoclassical sandstone portal marks the historical crossing into Dorotheenstadt and stands as the central civic monument of Berlin.

The monument stands where the historic highway once led toward Brandenburg an der Havel, replacing earlier customs fortifications with classical colonnades. Royal architect Carl Gotthard Langhans came from Breslau to execute the Greek revival design, intending the colonnade as the centerpiece of an architectural program along the Spree. Above the entablature sits the bronze quadriga sculpted by Johann Gottfried Schadow.

Originally designated as the Peace Gate, the structure became an arena for shifting political control. French troops under Napoleon took the crowning chariot sculpture to Paris following battlefield victories, until General Ernst von Pfuel secured its return. Architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel then redesigned the ensemble with Victoria bearing an Iron Cross and Prussian eagle, aligning the eastbound chariot toward Pariser Platz.
