Long-term researchers in Mitte treat the classical portico and the pleasure garden as a daily study retreat, avoiding tour crowds by examining the antiquity galleries on weekday mornings.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed the building to make royal art accessible under Prussian educational ideals. Positioned opposite the pleasure garden, the Ionic portico anchors an ensemble framed by the Zeughaus armoury, the royal palace, and Berlin Cathedral. The layout balanced civic scholarship against state power. Its interior spaces display classical Greek and Roman antiquities alongside historic coinage.
Originally opened as the royal museum, the building adopted its current name after the adjacent Neues Museum was completed on the island. The surrounding grounds later lost their original Neoclassical harmony when Berlin Cathedral was rebuilt in an enlarged neo-Renaissance style. Early curatorial policies strictly restricted ground-floor displays to Classical Mediterranean sculpture, excluding prehistoric artefacts.
