À propos du lieu

Prague's largest synagogue stands in Nové Město as an active Modern Orthodox house of worship.

The building ranks as the largest synagogue in Prague, though not the largest nationwide. Designed by Wilhelm Stiassny and constructed by Alois Richter, the hall replaced older communal houses including the Zigeiner, Velkodvorská, and New synagogues. It took its initial dedication from the imperial jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph, while local usage retains the Jerusalem Synagogue title from its Nové Město street setting.

Original construction catered to Reform practice, outfitting the interior with an organ and a dedicated choir loft. Today the congregation aligns officially with Orthodox Judaism, hosting active Modern Orthodox services for the local Jewish community. Daily and seasonal liturgy remains far less stringent than at the Old New Synagogue, giving long-term residents a functional communal space outside the Josefov tourist circuit.
