Residents settling near Prague Castle quickly discover that cathedral bells and ceremonial crowds dictate their daily walking route.
The sanctuary grew through successive rebuilds inside the castle grounds. Duke Wenceslaus founded an early Romanesque rotunda for Saint Vitus after securing a relic from Emperor Henry. That church served castle residents while Christian and pagan communities coexisted. Prince Spytihnev later replaced it with an expanded basilica. King Charles then turned the site into a royal coronation church and pilgrimage shrine.
French architect Matthias of Arras began the Gothic structure with flying buttresses, radiating chapels, and rigid geometric proportions reminiscent of Rodez Cathedral. After his death, Peter Parler assumed direction of the workshop. Parler introduced innovative net vaults across the choir ceiling, using crossing rib networks that strengthen the stone roof while creating dynamic zigzag patterns overhead.
Beyond its architectural role, the cathedral functions as the metropolitan seat for the Archbishop of Prague. The building houses the kingdom treasury, royal crypt vaults, and the dedicated shrine of Saint Wenceslaus. Early founders selected the patron saint partly because the Czech pronunciation echoed the Slavic deity Svantevit, smoothing conversions among local inhabitants who visited the complex.
