Sobre el lugar

Annapolis functions as a compact maritime capital where government administration and naval traditions shape daily routines.

Annapolis functions as the capital of Maryland and the seat of Anne Arundel County. State government operations and the United States Naval Academy dominate downtown life. Commercial oyster packing and boatbuilding once formed the local economic base, but recreational sailing has supplanted working fleets along the waterfront. Pleasure craft now crowd the City Dock where working vessels previously offloaded their catch.

The historic core preserves early street plans and brick architecture. The Banneker-Douglass Museum inside Mount Moriah Church chronicles African American heritage, while the Hammond-Harwood House displays regional colonial design alongside paintings by Charles Willson Peale. Naval artifacts and ship models fill Preble Hall. Local stages run by Colonial Players and the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre present regular community theater.

Everyday mobility relies heavily on walking between Church Circle and the waterfront. Street parking becomes scarce during warmer months, while municipal transit buses frequently run off schedule. Multiple law enforcement agencies maintain an active street presence across the core. In the evenings, neighborhood dining rooms along Main Street transform into crowded drinking spots where midshipmen and state politicians mingle.

Annapolis

The next city is Annapolis. It is also a seaside city. Near the waterfront, they organize excursions on a large ship. Sailing on the ship, you can see many of the city's landmarks. Compared to Baltimore, this city is very calm and small; there are no tall buildings like in Baltimore. The city consists of low-rise buildings and is very charming. Located not far from the waterfront is an interesting and beautiful park. I didn't expect it myself, but I met a man there who served in our Russian army 20 years ago, and although he has no one to speak Russian with now, he still remembers the language quite well and is simply delighted with Russia. I also met a woman there who has never been to Russia but teaches Russian at one of the universities. We had a very interesting conversation between the three of us. Annapolis is probably a city for those who are tired of big cities and the huge number of people. Here you can take a break from all of that.

Washington, Washington D.C.

No windows, no doors, a room full of people... The places where I lived during the summer deserve special attention. First, there was the Ethiopian-Russian community at our manager's house; second, the basement, which everyone affectionately called Moscow because of the constant cold and darkness. The benches on the National Mall (very comfortable, I must say) and the constant random sleepovers in Washington don't count. More on those later ;) The first month felt like a dream, as our manager turned out to be a world-class person, putting us up in his home and spoiling us like his own kids. And there were five of us, so there was never a dull moment. Ethiopian and Russian parties, movie nights with beer, chatting about nonsense, and frequent letters home—in short, a kind of template for the summer scenario for most Work and Travel participants. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, it ended quickly, and in early July, the three of us moved in with some Arab acquaintances. To be honest, the shock of seeing the room we were supposed to live in is impossible to put into words. This tiny closet didn't just lack furniture; it didn't even have windows! Furthermore, it was freezing in the basement (the air conditioning, of course, was on full blast...). Now imagine how hard it was for us to get up in the mornings when it's dark and cold outside, it was terrifying!! At first, we even went upstairs to socialize with the other members of this Jordanian family; I spent three whole days memorizing the names of all eleven people and various greetings in Arabic. But soon, we got tired of the same faces and the dull atmosphere in the basement, and we often just stayed over at our friends' places. Sometimes in Washington, sometimes in Annapolis, sometimes in Baltimore... In short, we had fun however we could :)
