Sobre el lugar

Quirinal Palace stands on the highest ridge of the historic city as the active workplace of the head of state.

Ancient patricians built luxury villas and imperial bath complexes on this elevated crest to escape the malarial humidity of the river basin. Pope Gregory later started the current palace on Monte Cavallo by commissioning Ottaviano Mascherino to incorporate a private villa into a courtyard building. Carlo Maderno and Francesco Borromini subsequently added a bell tower above the panoramic tower.

Domenico Fontana designed the external façade, while Carlo Maderno created the Great Chapel. Inside, the grand ceremonial stairs display the Blessing Christ fresco by Melozzo da Forlì alongside chapel murals by Guido Reni. The property housed the civil government of the Papal States and hosted conclaves before transferring to the head of state.

Massive statues of Castor and Pollux taming horses decorate the fountain on the public square outside, where ancient temples to Quirinus once stood. Behind the monumental building, enclosed formal gardens cover the hilltop. Several national leaders chose to sleep in private flats across the capital, treating the palace as an executive office.
