Pittsburgh moved beyond its industrial past to build an economy anchored in healthcare and technology.

The economy shifted away from steel manufacturing toward biomedical research, education, and software engineering. Former industrial complexes house corporate offices, while healthcare networks and universities provide the largest share of local employment. This transition reshaped the commercial landscape without erasing the physical legacy of industrial warehouses and rail corridors.

Rugged river bluffs and water junctions divide the city into self-contained districts. Commuters rely on bridges and hillside inclines to cross the river valleys, while regional expressways branch outward through tunnels. Narrow streets and steep grades complicate vehicular navigation, making neighborhood selection critical for daily travel to work or study.

Neighborhood culture retains strong regional customs, from casual taverns serving beer and regional dishes like pierogies to major art institutions such as the Andy Warhol Museum. Local pride centers around sports franchises, where fans display fierce allegiance. Long-term residents find compact community business strips with independent grocers and coffee shops throughout each valley.

Pittsburgh-New York final push

Throughout the summer, I really wanted to go to Pittsburgh. This city is famous for being located at the confluence of three rivers and having around 1,900 bridges in and around it. The city also has its own sports teams for hockey, baseball, and American football, each with its own arena. You can see a bit of Europe in this city, which is what sets Pittsburgh apart from the rest of America. Summer ended, but I still really wanted to see the city. At the last moment, three days before the end of my work season, the thought hit me that if I didn't see Pittsburgh, I would definitely regret it. So the plan was: finish work, say goodbye to everyone the next day, hop on a bus in the evening, and head to Pittsburgh (and then straight to New York from there—my flight home was out of JFK). I had a plan, but since I was working all day and then spending my evenings saying goodbye to everyone I'd met over the summer, I didn't have any concrete ideas about what exactly to do or see in Pittsburgh. My last day at work was almost free, and the weather wasn't great, so I decided to bring my laptop and figure out what I could realistically manage to do in a day in Pittsburgh. After spending a couple of hours online, I figured out almost everything I needed to see and where it was located, just in case I had to ask for directions from a taxi driver or a passerby. The most beautiful thing about this city is the view from the observation decks, from which you can see the entire downtown, the North Side, and a bit of the South Side. I really liked this city, even though I only spent one day there. I recommend everyone go and see it with their own eyes, especially Pittsburgh at night—you can sit on the observation deck for hours and not notice how time flies. It's so comfortable there that you feel right at home. In the end, I actually did it! Then I arrived in NY, checked into a hostel, walked around a bit, and then repacked my things. I had a suitcase, two bags, and a backpack, and I had to turn that into just one suitcase and a backpack. While repacking, I threw away almost everything I didn't really need. In the end, I fit everything in and, with a calm soul, went to see NY at night. The next day, I realized I couldn't waste a single minute and had to see what I'd wanted to for a long time (the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Brooklyn itself). Last year, I lived in Brooklyn for a day, but I never managed to see any of the hidden corners. So, I checked out early in the morning, took the subway, and made it to the botanical garden (the garden itself is small, but it would have been nice just to stroll around). I didn't end up walking around Brooklyn because I was traveling alone again, and I felt a bit scared (plus, on the way to Brooklyn, three police officers were riding in my subway car—it was September 9th, and police were almost everywhere because September 11th was approaching). One of the officers managed to scare me, but I pulled myself together and still visited the botanical garden.

Crazy Stories

I don't think anyone will guess where I'm writing from now, even after reading my last postJ. It feels like an eternity has passed since our last message. I'll start by saying we are no longer in Pittsburgh, but 10 hours away from it)) The city itself is interesting, though the center seemed boring to us after the massive, colorful Manhattan. On the way to Pittsburgh, beautiful valleys with lakes framed by high hills opened up around us. Honestly, we weren't in the mood for them; we were barely getting any sleep, falling over onto our neighbors. Upon arrival, we set off into the unknown again. We wound around concrete high-rises until we accidentally ran into some Russian girls who called out to us. Like a lighthouse in a strong stormJ, they took us to their place, we dumped our useless suitcases in one of the rooms that the tenants were moving out of that same day))) 200 bucks a month near the forest, all the tenants are Russian, everything is great. There was even an opportunity to find something with work from the locals. After walking around the supermarket and the nearest neighborhoods, we went into our future room, which didn't boast an exquisite style, just two shabby mattresses on the floor. After talking to the people moving out, we found out that we would have to share such a room with local tenants – beetles, cockroaches, and all kinds of insects (that's why the tenants were moving out). We went out to philosophize about this topic in the city. The surroundings were distinguished only by steep climbs and descents, from which stamped houses were falling. Against this background, we decided to call the landlady of the room by the beach in Brighton, which we wanted to rent ))) She warmly invited us to her place, unfolding mountains of money before us (I mentioned that her friend works in employment) and scolded us for leaving the beach. In short, we went back)) Yes, thank you very much to the girls who helped us. On the way to the auto park, a smiling young guy stopped near us, promising to take us to the place. I have never felt a stranger route than the one we took. We were driving with the windows open and he was shouting insults and mockery at every passerby every second, accompanying everything with a very satisfied laugh. Our engine was roaring down the whole street, once it led him into the oncoming lane. We drove for about half an hour, although we planned to walk)) Advice! If you want to get home alive, use a taxi) After sleeping somehow through the night on the already familiar bus and route, we met the beloved streets of New York. Not having reached the landlady of the room, we went straight to her with our suitcases, because there was nowhere else to go. But she wasn't there, and they said she would only be there tomorrow)) In a panic, we ran through all the ads in the Russian rental listings again and only closer to the evening did we find an expensive room on the veeeery outskirts of Coney Island, which is where I'm writing from now)) We are broke and without any work, but well-fed and rested) Advice! We don't even know ourselves what led us to Pittsburgh) Despair, a thirst for travel, recklessness, or all of this together, but it's better not to rush into an unfamiliar city without having weighty reasons for it. We lost a bunch of money, energy, and time. Weigh every step you take.
