Residents around the triangular junction trade quiet side streets for direct transit north of Union Square, sharing sidewalks where Broadway crosses Fifth Avenue.
The Fuller Company developed the tower as its corporate headquarters, employing architect Daniel Burnham alongside Frederick P. Dinkelberg. Its distinctive footprint mirrors the acute wedge created where Broadway crosses Fifth Avenue, earning a moniker derived from traditional cast-iron clothes irons. The structure introduced steel-skeleton engineering to midtown Manhattan as the first true skyscraper north of Union Square.
Clearing the constricted plot required evicting residential tenants, including a lone holdout named Winfield Scott Proskey who stayed until declared bankrupt. Municipal regulators scrutinized the structural submission, demanding documentation for wind-bracing and fireproofing while dropping demands for external fire escapes. The builder installed copper-sheathed fireproof timber frames across all windows.
The project represented a calculated investment by Harry S. Black in a district then suffering from physical decline. Atlantic Terra Cotta Company manufactured the exterior cladding, while structural engineer Corydon Purdy engineered the narrow steel skeleton. Upon completion, the tower ranked as the tallest commercial building in Manhattan north of the Financial District.
