Living in New York requires managing extreme fixed costs while navigating an entirely transit-oriented daily routine.

Daily transit operates through the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, running continuous subway and bus routes across the boroughs. Riders tap contactless payment through the OMNY system, where automated weekly fare caps eliminate transit costs for the remainder of the period. Long-term residents avoid the expenses of vehicle maintenance, fuel, and garage parking, relying on transit rather than personal cars.

Landlords enforce rigid qualification standards, demanding gross annual income equal to steep multiples of the agreed rent. Central neighbourhoods command major premiums over outer districts. Most residential leases bundle municipal water and sewer charges into base rent, while electric bills from Con Edison remain separate. Tenants face notable winter heating fluctuations depending on building radiators.

Arrivals from John F. Kennedy International Airport reach Manhattan either by regulated flat-rate yellow cabs or through the AirTrain rail connection at Jamaica Station, which bypasses expressway bottlenecks. Everyday expenses scale rapidly in dining hubs such as the West Village and Williamsburg, where restaurant bills include local meal taxes alongside customary service gratuities and rising specialty cafe tariffs.

How do travelers get from JFK Airport into Manhattan?

Rail transit runs via the airport train connecting directly to the city subway system, bypassing highway traffic completely. Official street taxis offer flat-rate transit to Manhattan destinations, though toll charges, peak surcharges, and tips add to the final tab. Private passenger transfers operate continuously from the airport passenger terminals.

NEW YORK

After a month, it was time for my first travels. My most desired city was NYC. That was exactly where I dreamed of celebrating my birthday. Round-trip bus tickets from Peter Pan cost $140. New York made an incredible impression on me. It is a city that charms you from the very first minutes. It mesmerizes with the scale of its buildings and structures, amazes with its frantic rhythm, the incredible flow of people, and the contrast expressed in the combination of luxury life with marginalized people sleeping on the streets and piles of trash. New York is a real concrete jungle. Central Park is probably one of the few places with greenery and trees. Overall, I was delighted with the city. Must-visit places in NYC (with addresses): *TIP FOR FUTURE PARTICIPANTS: to make it easier to navigate in unfamiliar places, download offline maps) Excursion “Panoramic view from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building” - $41 (20 W 34th St, New York) One-hour ferry tour to the Statue of Liberty - $30. One of the most affordable. Includes arrival at the destination, a minute stop, and return to the pier. National September 11 Memorial & Museum. A complex built on the site of the destroyed World Trade Center (180 Greenwich St, New York) Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038) Central Park (Central park) Times Square (Manhattan, NY 10036) Manhattan District 5th Avenue (a street where boutiques of famous designers are located; a symbol of American prestige and luxury) Wall Street — financial center (Wall Street) Grand Central Terminal (89 E 42nd St, New York) Broadway. Here, among the skyscrapers, are the offices of the largest American and global corporations. (Broadway) Rockefeller Center — a place known for the fact that the very same Christmas tree is installed there annually;). (45 Rockefeller Plaza, New York) St. Patrick's Cathedral (5th Ave, New York, NY 10022)

Stop 6. New York

My first encounter with New York didn't go well. We had a mutual dislike. Naturally, I arrived this time with a bias and didn't expect to feel any warmth at all. But everything turned out better than I imagined. I wasn't filled with anger or disgust; I went because I had to, and just to tick a few boxes. But the most valuable thing was hearing: "Yes, I like Chicago better." New York is a city with too good of a PR campaign, behind which there isn't anything truly worthwhile. It's dirty, noisy, and crowded. The Statue of Liberty isn't that majestic, Central Park isn't that magical, Rockefeller Center isn't that luxurious, and Grand Central Terminal isn't that big, though it is impressive. We visited almost all the iconic spots from our favorite movies and TV shows. And in all this chaos, I found a place that captured my heart - the Empire State Building. I admired every little detail: from the doormen to the museum. Stylish, original, interactive, rich! Delight enveloped me on every floor. Standing on the observation deck, I was waiting for someone to propose to me. The atmosphere of magic and romance hangs in the air here. The view is so mesmerizing that it takes your breath away. Almost everyone wants to get here. But only a small fraction of them will truly connect with this atmosphere, lifestyle, and the spirit of the streets. It is a cruel and ruthless world where people are ready to sell their souls for fame and success. You can hit the jackpot of your life or fall to the very bottom. You can love or hate New York, curse it or worship it. But one thing is for sure: no one will remain indifferent.

STORY 2: OH, NEW YORK , NEW YORK …

Story 2: Oh, New York, New York… Chap.1 Yeah boy Manhattan, skyscrapers, The Great Gatsby, avenues… – That’s how I imagined New York for 20 years. And then… The plane lands, the passport is stamped, the suitcase is picked up… and from the taxi window, to an Aerosmith song, you inhale the wind of freedom… (which is supposed to make your hair flutter, of course). Oh boy (as Americans would say). Geographical ecstasy. But after 5 minutes in Times Square, you realize that this very wind, on whose wings you flew from Balandino airport to JFK, is firmly and long-soaked with the scent of homeless people sleeping on every corner, handsome guys, and the smell of trash rotting on the sidewalks of the unofficial capital of the USA. “You just went to the wrong places!” they tell me in response to my indignation. Seriously? The wrong places? Where should I have gone? Why did no one warn me that Wall Street would smell bad, and on Fifth Avenue, I would have to do a grand battement over a sewage river? Well, yeah, we didn't see any homeless people in Central Park, consider yourself lucky. Fine, we were just “in the wrong place,” okay. Chap.2 Subway surf If your life is too calm, then, as they say, “Welcome!”. So, on Kasimina (see story #1), an African-American grandmother leaned over to rest on the subway. Standing up. And that would be fine, but for some reason, when she woke up, she exclaimed with a dissatisfied face: “Miss!”. Like: “Hey, woman, why aren't you holding me?” Lifehack: in any confusing situation in the USA, start speaking Russian. Even the most brazen ones don't know how to respond to our polite: “Young man, unfortunately, I don't understand a word of this gibberish you just uttered.” Problems are usually solved with one sentence. Any word with our Russian “rrrrr” sound scares people: they raise their eyebrows, nod respectfully, and walk away silently. This worked always and everywhere, but not at the “Brooklyn Bridge” subway station, where I again said with an impassive look to a tanned gentleman that I didn't know how to speak his language. And then he replied with his tanned mouth: “You understand everything. And I remember you.” Really? Just… You would remember, there’s no one else white here besides Kasimina and me. #saynotoracism Chap.3 This side of Brooklyn Bridge As you guessed, we spent the last 2 days of our stay in the USA living in Brooklyn. It’s a place where if your skin color is even slightly lighter than the earth, you are “beautiful”. And I don't even know what hardened me more: 3 years of studying at the “heat engineering” department or 2 days of living in Brooklyn. Anyway, not a bad experience. Sharing: A) “Hey Arnold!” was “filmed” in Brooklyn. B) We lived in a house like “Hey Arnold!”’s. C) Not with Arnold, but with his tanned friend Gerald. D) And with other very tanned guys. E) Better lock the door at night. F) And push the wardrobe. Against the door. Another lifehack: if you belong to this very “beautiful” category, then even on a hot day in Brooklyn, don't forget to wear something baggy that hides your body from neck to toe. The main thing is not to attract attention: nobody likes show-offs. Although no. They like them too much. #usatoday #tobecontinued

China trip

Hey! Hello, China! Hello, Chinese buses! Glad to see you, Chinese guides! And in this case, it's not bad, as you might have thought. Every bus had built-in air conditioning, and the guides spoke both Chinese and English (Chinese is such a funny language, you have to hear it, it's hard to describe in words). And all this for a ridiculous price. But let's start from the very beginning, or rather, from my return to the "city that never sleeps." I bought 3 tickets online for a 3-day tour: "New York, 1000 Islands, Niagara Falls, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York." They were running a promotion at the time: buy 2 tickets and get the 3rd one free (only on the condition that the 3rd tour participant stays in the same hotel room as the other 2). Again, with the help of the World Wide Web, I found 2 people willing to join me on this mini-trip. Their names were Kristina and Tyoma. At 7 a.m., the buses pulled up to Chinatown, we threw our bags into the luggage compartment, and set off toward the unknown.

New - York - Chicago

24/06/10 After meeting Gleb at JFK, we decided to buy plane tickets to Chicago first thing, but that didn't go as planned!!! The tickets went up from $120 to $200 :0 We definitely didn't expect that. After checking the local Internet, we decided to take a bus for $105. Having arrived at the Port Authority bus terminal in New York, we bought our tickets, and since the bus was leaving at 10:25 pm, we had about 3 hours to spare to see New York :) Note: In the USA, they can sell as many tickets for intercity buses as they want, so I advise you to get in line as early as possible, otherwise you might just run out of space and have to wait for the next bus. Which is exactly what happened to us! Honestly, I was surprised; having heard about how well-organized everything is in the USA, this was a disappointment ( We had about a 17-hour bus ride ahead of us! It was good that we were traveling at night and managed to get some sleep) In the morning, we arrived in Cleveland. All I knew about this city was that it's the largest city in the state of Ohio. From the bus window, Cleveland gave the impression of an industrial center. The population is clearly not more than a million. The city is unremarkable and, in my opinion, ranks high in terms of crime and high taxes. So, I'm not setting foot in Cleveland again)))) And here is Chicago! As we approached the city, you could feel the pulse of a metropolis) A beautiful view of huge skyscrapers opened up from the window (5 out of 10 of the tallest buildings in the USA are in Chicago) Wealthy Obama is from Chicago, I hope I manage to take a look at his house))) A more detailed review of Chicago will be on a separate page. After making a few calls to our friend from CouchSurfing, Joseph, we still couldn't get through to him( But we had his address! We went to his house... Finding Joseph's house turned out not to be so easy! In a state of extreme fatigue, we wandered the streets in search of the address we needed. It was dark outside, and the prospect of sleeping in a park didn't make us happy( Finally, having found the right house, we were happy, but after an elderly woman opened the door and said she didn't know any Joseph, the smile vanished from our faces instantly! And there we were, standing in total darkness under a dimly lit street lamp, with an A1-sized map and wondering what to do next, when suddenly we heard in a language not our own: - Hey guys, can I help you!? - it was Randy *Note: You can get help in the USA when you least expect it! People here are more trusting and ready to help at any moment, setting aside all their own business. Randy explained to us that we just got the wrong street! The funniest thing is that the house numbers on the opposite street are the same! He walked us to Joseph's house and promised to help with housing for our 3-month stay in Chicago) Joseph turned out to be a cool guy! He immediately showed us where we could sleep and take a shower) PS That's how a complete stranger can help you) and this is a perfectly normal phenomenon for America;)

From New Yorker to New York City

From New Yorker to New York City We are the only ones who create our own lives, and it depends only on us how our day goes, where we will be tomorrow, and where we were yesterday. We are our own best friends and worst enemies when we independently hinder our dreams, which sometimes seem unattainable. But is fear really stronger than all your cherished desires, the scenarios in your head before sleep, your wildest dreams? That is exactly what I was thinking about when I hesitated to sit down and write this story, putting it off. Even though here it is—the chance you have been dreaming of. What are you waiting for? But if you are reading this now, then apparently, I made up my mind. What pushed me to do this? Of course, not even trying to participate, to test my luck and fortune, is foolish. Just as adults keep their untouched expensive crystal in cabinets at home, I keep all the pictures, songs, stories from acquaintances, YouTube videos, blogs, and articles related to this dream—or rather, this goal. It all started in school, but not right away. I have been learning English since the first grade. My first memories of English lessons at school are our teacher, Lyudmila Nikolaevna, playing some recording on a tape recorder while reading a horoscope from the penultimate page of Cosmopolitan magazine, or giving us an assignment to read a text while she goes to the cafeteria to drink coffee with a bun. Then came the tenses, structures, articles, prepositions, “London is the capital of Great Britain,” and all that. I didn't want to go to class at all, and seeing this subject on the schedule made cold sweat and goosebumps run down my body. The lesson itself seemed like an eternity when you calculate which sentence you will get and nervously look at the clock. Since childhood, my parents have been opening up the world to me through travel and more, talking about the importance of learning languages, and helping and supporting me on this path. That is why, during my school years, I was enrolled in courses and had tutors. My older sister, who has always been a role model, helped and motivated me to learn through her love for foreign music. But my true desire and aspiration—when you do it not because it is right, or necessary, or because you don't want to upset anyone—appeared in the 8th grade. When I accidentally stumbled upon Marie Novosad's YouTube channel. This girl went to America on a student exchange program and filmed vlogs about her life every day. She showed everything: Americans, studies, dorms, shops, nature, etc. In a word, the American life from those very series/movies on Jetix, Disney, and Nickelodeon. Each video was filled with such a new and unexplored atmosphere that I wanted to jump from the emotions overflowing in me. I retold her videos to my mom and friends and rewatched them. I realized that I wanted the same; I don't want to just watch someone else's life, I want to live these situations myself, see these cities, and talk to people. Thanks to this, I started looking for various programs for my country. And I stumbled upon the Work and Travel USA program, studied the requirements, and started looking for even more information. I subscribed to all possible blogs and channels of students who participated in this program and shared their experience. Back then, I was in the 10th grade and understood that all I could do for now was: learn English, enter university, try to work in the service sector in my country, hang a picture of New York City in front of my bed, and not forget to dream. Now I am 19 years old, I am a third-year student at the Minsk State Linguistic University, studying English and Spanish, and working part-time as a sales consultant at the New Yorker store. (By the way, I haven't introduced myself, my name is Nadya. Now that you have a little idea about me, you will definitely remember me). It is hard for me to say whether all this happened on purpose or by accident, but I like where I am now and what

Just as adults keep their untouched, expensive crystal in china cabinets at home, I keep all the pictures, songs, acquaintances' stories, YouTube videos, blogs and articles related to this dream, or rather to this goal. It all started in school, but not immediately. I have been learning English since first grade. My earliest memories from school English lessons are our teacher, Lyudmila Nikolaevna, turning on some recording on the tape recorder, reading a horoscope from the penultimate page of Cosmopolitan magazine, or giving the assignment to read a text and going to the cafeteria to drink coffee with a bun. Then came tenses, constructions, articles, prepositions, "London is the capital of Great Britain" and all that. I really didn't want to attend the lessons at all, and seeing this subject on the schedule would make me break out in a cold sweat and get goosebumps. The lesson itself felt like an eternity when you try to figure out which sentence you'll get, and nervously watch the clock. From childhood my parents opened up the world to me, thanks to travels and more, they talked about the importance of learning languages, helped and supported me on this path. That's why in school they enrolled me in courses and hired tutors. My older sister, who has always been a role model, helped and motivated me to study through her love of foreign music. But my true desire and drive — when you do it not because it's the right thing to do, or to avoid disappointing someone — appeared in 8th grade. When I accidentally came across Marie Novosad's YouTube channel. This girl went to America on a student exchange program and filmed daily vlogs about her life. She showed everything: Americans, studying, dorm life, stores, nature, etc. In short, American life like from those TV shows/movies on Jetix, Disney, Nickelodeon. Each video was filled with such a new and unexplored atmosphere that I felt like leaping from the emotions that overwhelmed me. I retold her videos to my mother and friends, rewatched them. I realized that I want the same; I don't want just to watch someone else's life, I want to live those situations myself, see those cities, talk to people. Thanks to that, I started looking for various programs available for my country. And I came across the "Work and Travel USA" program, studied the requirements and started searching for even more information. I subscribed to all possible blogs and channels of students who had participated in this program and shared their experiences. Back then I was in 10th grade and I understood that all I could do at the moment was: study English, enter university, try working in the service sector in my country, hang a picture with a view of New York City above my bed and not stop dreaming. Now I am 19 years old, I am in my third year at the Minsk State Linguistic University, studying English and Spanish, and I work part-time as a sales consultant at the New Yorker store. (By the way, I haven't introduced myself — my name is Nadya. Now that you have a little idea about me, you'll definitely remember me). It's hard for me to say whether all this happened on purpose or by chance, but I like where I am now and what I do. O

New York City Expirience

Finally, the housing situation is sorted. Some girls moved in with us. Now life is good, and living is great :) It was decided at the council to spend the saved piastres immediately. The hero city of New York is in our sights. We decided to head out tomorrow. Armed with a Budweiser, I seriously tackled the question of what and how. I found out a lot of interesting things. In particular, with a bit of luck, you can get from Atlantic City (where I am) to New York and back on Chinese bus lines for just ten bucks. This is considering that Greyhound asks for a full 35. A lucky scenario is to buy a ticket to New York for 15 (or even 10), then take a round-trip from New York for 25, and upon arrival at the Hilton casino, get a 25-dollar cash bonus. Total: 15 (10) + 25 - 25 = 15 (10). I'll clarify everything tomorrow. If it's really possible for 10, I'll be practically obligated to go to NY every day. Google was appointed responsible for the cultural program. I found the following useful resources: http://www.clubfreetime.com/ - Free events in New York. Convenient. You choose a date and get a list. You can choose the type of event (walk, concert, theater performance, etc.). It's not completely free—it asks for registration to find out where and when the event starts. But Google helps out again here; you enter the name and find everything you need in the first few links. By the way, registration is a symbolic three dollars. http://www.ny.com/museums/free.html - A list of free museums and museums with "pay what you wish" admission. Convenient links to the operating schedule of each museum. http://gonyc.about.com/od/freestuff/tp/free_attraction.htm - A list of free attractions and entertainment. In general, the whole site http://gonyc.about.com/ is not bad for the uninitiated. http://www.43places.com/places/view/105154/new-york-city-new-york-state - Attractions, photos of the Big Apple. I would say 43places.com is a site worth starting with. It's as addictive as Wikipedia. Since tomorrow is Monday, museums are closed. No big deal. Walks, photography, and hearty meals will save the father of Russian democracy from boredom. Visit Chinatown, meet the morning in Manhattan with a cup of coffee, eat pizza in Little Italy, attend a Bluegrass concert (who are they?).. They are promising a thunderstorm by evening. Let's hope they are lying, and with that hope, we'll head to bed. As a matter of fact: Batteries are in full combat readiness. More plans than in the USSR. Wake up at five. Report upon arrival.
