Long-term residents trade open street traffic for the quiet perimeter of the square, doing their daily walking under vaulted brick arcades rather than crowded sidewalks.
The French crown commissioned the square on the demolished grounds of Hôtel des Tournelles, establishing a residential model for the nobility. Uniform facades of red brick and light stone surround the perimeter above vaulted arcades resting on square pillars. Steep slate roofs with pedimented dormers create an unbroken roofline, interrupted only by elevated royal pavilions that guard the arched access gates into the Marais.
Originally designated as Place Royale, the site received its modern name to honor the Vosges department for funding revolutionary military campaigns. The enclosed interior excludes through traffic, centering instead on gravel paths, manicured lawns, and clipped linden groves. Victor Hugo composed works while residing along the perimeter, where his former apartment now operates as a public municipal museum.
