Δημαρχιακό Μέγαρο του Παρισιού: τι υπάρχει τριγύρω, πώς να φτάσετε και πότε να πάτε · 2026
Residents around the esplanade navigate frequent political demonstrations and civic assemblies right outside the municipal headquarters.
The municipal palace anchors local civil administration where Parisian government has operated continuously since medieval times.
The seat of municipal government began when the merchant provost Étienne Marcel purchased the House of Pillars along the river strand. King Francis commissioned Italian architect Dominique de Cortone, known as Boccador, alongside Pierre Chambiges to replace the old structure with a grand Renaissance palace. That building project established the permanent administrative headquarters where the municipal council meets today.

Revolutionary turmoil centered on the complex when an angry crowd killed provost Jacques de Flesselles and soldiers later arrested Maximilien Robespierre following a failed suicide attempt. Expansion projects directed by Prefect Rambuteau added side wings designed by architects Étienne-Hippolyte Godde and Jean-Baptiste Lesueur. Baron Haussmann later razed neighboring streets to clear Avenue Victoria for administrative access.
During civic insurrection under the Paris Commune, officials escaped armed takeovers through an underground passage connecting the cellar to nearby military barracks. Advancing troops triggered a scorched-earth retreat in which Communards ignited the complex during the bloody final week of fighting. The resulting conflagration ruined the historic structure and incinerated centuries of irreplaceable civic archives.
