About the place

The mansion stands at the junction of Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn, anchoring artistic education and contemporary exhibitions in a single historic complex.

King Christian granted the square-side plot to Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, who constructed the mansion as the initial structure on the square. Workers sourced masonry for the wings by dismantling Kalo Castle in Jutland and transporting the bricks to the site. The property later passed to Dowager Queen Charlotte Amalie, whose purchase gave the palace its lasting name after royal ownership expanded the site.

Royal ownership brought diverse cultural uses to the complex, including stage productions in a courtyard theater and the long-term installation of the national botanical collection in the rear garden grounds. The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts eventually took over the entire palace to host formal master classes. This established the property as the institutional center for Danish visual arts and architectural training.

The site operates as an active workspace where Kunsthal Charlottenborg mounts major international art exhibitions alongside academic studios. Researchers and long-term residents rely on Danmarks Kunstbibliotek for specialized reference materials and historical archives. Public canal foot traffic from Nyhavn creates constant activity around the outer gates while interior study halls maintain quiet working conditions.
