King Christian granted the square-side plot to Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, who constructed the mansion as the initial structure on the square. Workers sourced masonry for the wings by dismantling Kalo Castle in Jutland and transporting the bricks to the site. The property later passed to Dowager Queen Charlotte Amalie, whose purchase gave the palace its lasting name after royal ownership expanded the site.

Royal ownership brought diverse cultural uses to the complex, including stage productions in a courtyard theater and the long-term installation of the national botanical collection in the rear garden grounds. The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts eventually took over the entire palace to host formal master classes.
