Residents treat the pedestrianised canal as an open public square, though navigating dense crowds along the waterfront becomes a daily commute hurdle.

About the place

A historic canal district transformed from a rough maritime haven into a pedestrian thoroughfare lined with wooden ships and heritage townhouses.

Dug by Danish soldiers and Swedish prisoners of war under King Christian V, the canal connected the inner city square at Kongens Nytorv directly to the sea. The quayside originally handled timber, commercial cargo, and the daily catch of local fishermen. For generations, the waterfront carried a notorious reputation dominated by sailors, beer houses, and boarding houses, where author Hans Christian Andersen also resided.

As overland transport displaced small freight vessels after major conflicts, the deserted waterway was revitalised by local preservation societies. The quayside transitioned from a vehicle parking area into a pedestrian zone and a designated museum harbour for historic wooden ships. Today, transit connects across the water via harbour buses by the Royal Playhouse and the pedestrian drawbridge spanning toward Christianshavn.
