Casa Milà challenged conventional construction with an unconventional stone design that provoked local satire.

Antoni Gaudí designed the building as his final private residential project. Wealthy widow Roser Segimón and developer Pere Milà commissioned the work after purchasing a property along Paseo de Gracia. Rather than renovating the existing house, the owners demolished it entirely. The couple reserved the main floor for their private living quarters and planned to lease the remaining floors as rental apartments to city residents.

The design ignored conventional architectural aesthetics, triggering immediate public ridicule. Satirical magazines published caricatures mocking the unusual stone structure and the developer. Citizens coined the nickname La Pedrera to describe its rough-hewn stone facade. Municipal inspectors repeatedly fined the owners for building code infractions and ordered parts exceeding local height limits to be demolished.

Religious symbolism defines the cornice decoration, where Gaudí inscribed verses from the Rosary. The architect envisioned the house as a spiritual landmark, though planned statues of archangels and Mary were omitted. Long-term residents discover that the building functions as an active civic landmark rather than an isolated monument, anchored firmly by a network of registered local hosts across surrounding quarters.
