About the place

Beijing Ancient Observatory preserves pretelescopic astronomical instruments atop an imperial observation platform.

The observatory operated as an imperial research station under the Ming and Qing dynasties. Astronomers tracked celestial movements to deliver formal reports for the emperor, who governed as the Son of Heaven. These records guided statecraft and sea navigation, leading the court to recruit Muslim specialists for maritime charting. The complex succeeded an earlier Mongol site built under Kublai Khan.

European Jesuits restructured the facility after Ferdinand Verbiest won an imperial astronomy competition and took charge of operations. Verbiest supervised the rebuilding of primary observational tools to track stars and planets. Foreign forces looted several devices during the late Qing dynasty, which French and German governments eventually returned to China. Other early instruments remain preserved in Nanjing.
