Shaped like a Roman temple, the gallery preserves major historical collections of painting and sculpture on Museum Island.

The gallery stands on Museum Island as a UNESCO World Heritage site designed in Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival styles. Friedrich August Stüler planned the hall in the shape of a Roman temple with an apse, and Johann Heinrich Strack completed the work. Builders chose iron and brick framing behind Nebra sandstone to reduce fire risk. A memorial to the Prussian king overlooks the entrance stairs.
