Residents pass through the grid of concrete pillars on everyday foot commutes across Berlin, absorbing national history as a regular urban walkway rather than a weekend detour.
The memorial occupies open ground covered by concrete stelae arranged in rows on sloping terrain. Architect Peter Eisenman and the engineering firm Buro Happold designed the pillars with varied heights and paths set slightly askew. As visitors descend into the grid, the stone blocks rise overhead and block sightlines to Berlin.
Beneath the field of stone pillars sits an underground exhibition space named the Place of Information. This subterranean hall preserves personal records and individual biographies compiled from material provided by Yad Vashem. Above ground, the site functions without perimeter fences, integrating into surrounding city pathways.
Campaigning by journalist Lea Rosh and historian Eberhard Jäckel initiated the memorial project, prompting the German parliament to establish the site by official resolution. A federal foundation manages the installation today. Long-term residents experience the stone field not merely as a historic monument, but as an everyday urban junction.
