Residents who settle in Mitte cross the temple plaza before the daily tour buses arrive. Long-term tenants visit the sculpture halls on rainy weekday mornings while short-term crowds wait in lines outside.
The gallery stands on Museum Island as a UNESCO World Heritage site designed in Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival styles. Friedrich August Stüler planned the hall in the shape of a Roman temple with an apse, and Johann Heinrich Strack completed the work. Builders chose iron and brick framing behind Nebra sandstone to reduce fire risk. A memorial to the Prussian king overlooks the entrance stairs.
Banker Johann Heinrich Wagener established the collection through a private gift of paintings to the Prussian state. Hugo von Tschudi broadened the focus by purchasing French Impressionist pieces despite royal disapproval. Allied air raids damaged the galleries heavily during wartime. Postwar reconstruction and later redesign work by architect HG Merz restored the structure and added upper halls for Romantic painting.
