Teatro La Fenice stands as the premier opera venue in Venice, rebuilt repeatedly from ashes following catastrophic fires and legal battles.

The theater emerged after a legal dispute expelled the noble box-holders association from Teatro San Benedetto. The displaced patrons bought land between local parishes, cleared private residences, and commissioned architect Giannantonio Selva through a design competition. Named after the mythical phoenix rising from ashes, the neoclassical house adopted tiered boxes in a traditional horseshoe layout facing a small campo.

Repeated fires destroyed the auditorium across its history, starting with a blaze from heating equipment and continuing through a destructive arson disaster. Architects Giambattista Meduna and later Aldo Rossi led successive reconstructions to restore the original neoclassical decoration.
