À propos du lieu

Teatro La Fenice stands as the premier opera venue in Venice, rebuilt repeatedly from ashes following catastrophic fires and legal battles.

The theater emerged after a legal dispute expelled the noble box-holders association from Teatro San Benedetto. The displaced patrons bought land between local parishes, cleared private residences, and commissioned architect Giannantonio Selva through a design competition. Named after the mythical phoenix rising from ashes, the neoclassical house adopted tiered boxes in a traditional horseshoe layout facing a small campo.

Repeated fires destroyed the auditorium across its history, starting with a blaze from heating equipment and continuing through a destructive arson disaster. Architects Giambattista Meduna and later Aldo Rossi led successive reconstructions to restore the original neoclassical decoration. The stage established European prestige by hosting operatic premieres for major bel canto masters including Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi.
