Theatregoers living nearby cannot visit the historic auditorium in Mitte, as extensive renovations send the company to Schiller Theater and an aircraft hangar at Tempelhof Airport.
Architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer designed the original theatre for a private society, inaugurating the stage with operetta and ballet. Operating successively as Theater Unter den Linden and Metropol-Theater, the hall gained prominence through revues and Franz Lehár premieres staged by Alfred and Fritz Rotter. Wartime bombing destroyed the historic façade and ceiling murals, prompting an emergency postwar revival.
Reconstituted in East Berlin under its current name with Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus, the institution received a modernist exterior and functional annexes from Architektenkollektiv Kunz Nierade. Staging Mozart's Don Giovanni marked that mid-century architectural renewal. During active building repairs, the ensemble mounts productions at external stages including Schiller Theater and an aircraft hangar at Berlin Tempelhof.
