The Prussian neoclassical guardhouse stands on Unter den Linden as Germany's central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny.
King Frederick William ordered the guardhouse opposite his palace, giving Karl Friedrich Schinkel his earliest major civic work. Modeled on a Roman castrum, the structure incorporates sturdy corner risalits, a base-free Doric portico, and a victory pediment by Johann Gottfried Schadow. Salomo Sachs noted in his autobiography that his earlier academy exhibition plans provided the foundation for Schinkel's layout.

Heinrich Tessenow transformed the interior into a memorial hall centered on an open oculus and a dark granite block with an oak wreath by Ludwig Gies. War damage from aerial bombing and urban artillery later gutted the site before East German authorities rebuilt it as a tribute to victims of fascism and militarism. Following German Reunification, the republic rededicated the hall as its central memorial to victims of war and tyranny.
