Residents treat the castle grounds as an everyday backyard, trading private garden space for morning routines along the renaissance ramparts.
Christian IV commissioned the estate as a rural summer retreat outside the capital fortifications. Dutch Renaissance architectural conventions shaped the structural plan, executed under the direction of Bertel Lange and Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger. Sequential building campaigns enlarged the original manor into a moated royal fortress.
Danish regents used the property as an active court until the era of Frederik IV. After that reign, sovereign families occupied the rooms exclusively during wartime and domestic catastrophes. The crown took refuge behind these walls when fire destroyed Christiansborg Palace, and regents returned during the British naval attack on Copenhagen.
