Supervised by architect Josip Vancaš and built by contractor Karl Schwarz of Vienna, the structure draws direct architectural inspiration from Notre-Dame in Dijon. The layout merges Neo-Gothic vaulting with Romanesque Revival towers in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Artillery barrages damaged the walls during the Siege of Sarajevo, though comprehensive repairs later restored the facade. Today the building functions as an official emblem across municipal heraldry. The entrance portal design is integrated into the flag and seal of Sarajevo Canton, while the twin bell towers stand on the municipal coat of arms.
