Josip Vancaš shaped the Old Town skyline by pairing Neo-Gothic halls with Romanesque spires modeled on French architecture.

Archbishop of Vrhbosna maintains his ecclesiastical seat at this sanctuary, which stands in the Old Town district as the largest cathedral in the territory. Supervised by architect Josip Vancaš and built by contractor Karl Schwarz of Vienna, the structure draws direct architectural inspiration from Notre-Dame in Dijon. The layout merges Neo-Gothic vaulting with Romanesque Revival towers in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Artillery barrages damaged the walls during the Siege of Sarajevo, though comprehensive repairs later restored the facade. Today the building functions as an official emblem across municipal heraldry.
