Residents in Castello trade direct wheeled transit for canal footpaths, hauling daily groceries across stone footbridges beside the Greek quarter.
The church rose after extended negotiations between the Venetian Republic and the papacy, following an era when public Orthodox worship faced strict prohibitions. Maritime dues levied on merchant vessels arriving from Orthodox ports funded the structural stonework. Sante Lombardo initiated the masonry, Giannantonio Chiona oversaw the later construction phases, and a freestanding leaning belltower completed the canal compound.
Inside, post-Byzantine aesthetics dominate the sanctuary. Giovanni Kyprios frescoed the Last Judgement across the overhead dome, while Cretan hagiographer Emanuele Tzane-Buniales painted ascetic hermits above the pilasters. Sacred panel paintings include historic icons of the Virgin Hodegetria and Christ Pantokrator, brought to the lagoon by Anna Notaras, daughter of the final megas doux of the Byzantine Empire.
Beyond the sanctuary walls, the complex preserves active intellectual institutions that long supported Greek diaspora scholars. The adjacent Flanginian School, once dedicated to training teachers, now accommodates the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies alongside a dedicated museum collection established by Sophia Antoniadis. Sculptor Baldassarre Longhena contributed the interior Seviros memorial.
