About the place

Dedicated museum galleries challenge the historical exclusion of female creators. The institution documents creative production from early Renaissance painters to contemporary leaders.

Wilhelmina and Wallace Holladay established the museum after discovering that art history texts omitted women, inspired by a still life by Clara Peeters. The collection combines historic masterworks with modern pieces by Mary Cassatt, Alma Woodsey Thomas, and Amy Sherald. It also houses Frida Kahlo's dedicated self-portrait, giving the city its only public painting by the Mexican artist.

The institution occupies a Renaissance Revival structure designed by Waddy B. Wood as a Masonic Temple for the Grand Lodge. Local preservationists from Don't Tear It Down saved the property from demolition before the museum acquired it. Early critics argued that separating female artists would cause isolation, yet the site expanded with the Elisabeth A. Kasser Wing to provide specialized research facilities.
