About the place

The United States Army maintains Arlington National Cemetery as an active military burial ground and national memorial.

The estate began as private plantation land where George Washington Parke Custis built Arlington House. The property later passed through marriage into the household of Robert E. Lee. Federal forces seized the high ground during the American Civil War to secure the capital, and when nearby burial yards reached capacity from wartime casualties, the government designated the grounds for military interments under the Quartermaster General.

Wartime authorities also established Freedman's Village across the southern acreage, providing housing and farmland for emancipated families. The grounds expanded over time into the largest cemetery in the national system, administered directly by the army. Newcomers residing nearby find an active military installation governed by continuous funeral processions and strict operational decorum rather than casual park access.
