Living near Lowry Hill turns contemporary art exhibitions and outdoor sculpture grounds into a regular neighborhood routine rather than an occasional outing.
The institution began when lumber businessman Thomas Barlow Walker opened his private collection to the public, eventually relocating to Lowry Hill. Federal support through the Works Progress Administration helped convert the private galleries into a civic art center under founding director Daniel Defenbacher, establishing an enduring commitment to contemporary visual art, design, and experimental stage performance.
The campus combines gallery architecture by Edward Larrabee Barnes with an expansive wing by Herzog and de Meuron containing performance theaters and gathering areas. Outside, the adjacent Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Cowles Conservatory operate in municipal partnership with the local parks department, integrating large-scale outdoor sculpture directly into the surrounding urban landscape.
Beyond gallery exhibitions, the center functions as an active incubator for multidisciplinary disciplines, having fostered the origins of the Minnesota Opera and hosted creative residencies for artists such as Keith Haring. Its permanent holdings encompass diverse media works, costumes, photography, and artist books, maintaining continuous public programs alongside periodic outdoor installations.
