Downtown residents navigate a district reshaped by indoor arena history and skyway connections during subzero winters.
The venue anchored downtown revitalization by bringing professional sports back from suburban Bloomington. The facility housed the Minnesota Vikings, the Minnesota Twins, and the Minnesota Golden Gophers under a single roof. Built with a utilitarian focus, the climate-controlled dome sheltered matches and spectators from harsh winter storms.
Architect Fazlur Rahman Khan designed the structure, which drew funding from hospitality levies, business contributions, and dedicated local taxation. Named in honor of civic leader Hubert Humphrey, the project spurred major urban debate. Heavy snow accumulations and high winds repeatedly tested the fabric roof, leading to air pressure losses and emergency repairs during extreme blizzards.
