Residents crossing Taras Shevchenko Boulevard step from dense city traffic directly into incense and choir liturgy, using the quiet nave as a daily refuge during long stays in the capital.
The cathedral features neo-Byzantine architecture finalized by Alexander Beretti and constructed with bricks donated by Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Inside, the walls display extensive frescoes directed by Adrian Prakhov alongside Venetian mosaics. Prominent artists including Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov, and Mikhail Vrubel contributed murals, notably the altar image of the Mother of God framed by a Carrara marble iconostasis.
During Soviet rule, the structure avoided demolition by operating as a museum of religion and atheism before reopening for continuous worship. It houses the historical relics of Saint Barbara, which were moved here from St Michael Golden-Domed Monastery prior to that site being torn down. The entrance doors present bronze relief figures of Olga of Kyiv and St Volodymyr looking out toward the intersection at Botanical Square.
