Hotel Ukraine: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026
Long-term guests on this Pechersk ridge trade level walking for a constant climb between the bustling central square below and the quiet government quarter above.
Hotel Ukraine terminates the post-war architectural ensemble along Khreshchatyk from its commanding ridge.
The hotel anchors the high ground overlooking Maidan Nezalezhnosti, terminating the post-war reconstruction axis of Khreshchatyk. Conceived under Soviet leadership as Hotel Moskva, the building replaced the lost Ginzburg House, which had stood on this promontory as the city's earliest skyscraper. Later renamed to mark Ukrainian independence, the structure functions as an imposing visual terminus for the central valley below.

Dense linden woods once covered these slopes before fortifications displaced residents and initiated the aristocratic Lypky neighborhood. Subdivision of the Friedrich Mering estate carved Olhinska Street along the southern flank, defining the isolated promontory seen today.
