Сент-Луїс... або лови кайф на трасі Route 66

Виїжджати з Кі-Вест зовсім не хотілося, але все хороше рано чи пізно закінчується.. Нам належало провести 34 години в автобусі, щоб потрапити до St. Louis. Чесно кажучи, я не планувала відвідувати це місто, але перетнути всю Америку зі сходу на захід без зупинок було б просто неможливо. Приїхали ми рано вранці і першою справою побігли митися в туалет.. Хоча «митися» це голосно сказано! Якщо вдається почистити зуби і помити голову – це вже щастя. Так-так, ніхто не помилився, я сказала помити голову.. Мити голову в раковині, а потім сушити під сушаркою для рук – не найвеселіше заняття, але у нас просто не було вибору. Втім, це всього лише дрібні незручності. Місто не дуже нам сподобалося, ми дісталися до головної пам'ятки – Gateway Arch – це величезна арка на березі Міссісіпі, яка символізує ворота на Захід. Погуляли трохи парками, сфотографували знамениту Route 66 і знову сіли на автобус. Таким чином у St. Louis ми провели не більше 6-7 годин.

27) 9-ТЕ МІСЦЕ. Великі рівнини

Фотографії рівнин майже всі кудись поділися. Як і спогади про ці 3 дні. Просто їхали.. Після Blue Ridge дорога ще деякий час веде нас залишками Great Smokies, а потім викочується на Кентуккійські рівнини. Якщо чесно, зрозуміло це стає тільки через знаки "Welcome to Kentucky" і Кентуккійські номери. Так - все як якась Саратовська область)) Тут є одне круте місце - найдовша печера у світі, Mammoth Cave. Ми самі не були, але після відвідування іншої печери (про неї пізніше) і спілкування з гідом, зрозуміли, що вона має бути дуже крута. За фотками, схоже, і правда так.. А ми їмо в місцевому KFC (а як же інакше)) і їдемо далі. Потім Іллінойс з незмінною картинкою за вікном і безглуздим обмеженням на трасах (ми, звичайно, їдемо не повільніше, ніж зазвичай, але так швидко відносно інших їхати неприємно=)). Попереду Міссурі біля місця впадіння в Міссісіпі і Сент-Луїс. Оо, думаємо, велика річка... Тут же дізнаємося мінімальні в Америці вимоги, щоб вважатися такою. Виявляється, що великою річкою тут вважається річка, шириною максимум пів Неви в місці впадіння у Фінську затоку або як Волга біля самих її витоків. Сент-Луїс прикольний, але набережна промислова, а сам брудний, а так нічого, атмосфера ніби якась є. Однак, поспішаємо, тому не дуже ловимо, яка саме) Потім виїжджаємо взагалі на пряму, що веде рівненько на захід. Навігатор просить через 1000 км з'їхати наліво, так що вирубаємо апарат і продовжуємо рух. Часу годин 5 вечора, сонце все ближче підкочується по небу зліва, поки, нарешті, не зависає прямо перед нами біля самого краю горизонту. Машину заливає золотом, народ задоволено мружиться на задніх сидіннях. Погоня за зіркою триває хвилин 45, поки вона не ховається десь кілометрах в 50 далі). Потім проїжджаємо нічний Канзас-сіті (до речі непоганий) і знову спимо. На ранок знову в дорогу. Навколо знову горбиста місцевість, як і всю дорогу до цього. Ідеально рівні рівнини починаються пізніше і тривають годин 5-6. Н-да, поняття про велич у американців, звичайно, кульгає) Навколо кукурудза, силоси та інші принади 60-х :) Чекаємо гори. До Денвера кілометрів 30, а їх все немає. Раптом піднімаємося на черговий пагорб - і перед нами просто стіна. Не піки вдалині. Не пагорби. Просто стіна з гір кілометра по 2 заввишки. Тут же відмітка, що ми вже як в 1,5 км над рівнем моря. Непогано. Денвер - так собі містечко. Нічого примітного, крім відсутності Bank of America. Він тут чомусь заборонений. Так що залишаємося без готівки. Спимо і їдемо наступного дня в Rocky Mountains.
