Dear Members of the Selection Committee, My name is Suttibaev Marat and I am a third-year student in Auezov South Kazakhstan University at the faculty of Philology. My specialty is teacher and translator of foreign languages: two foreign languages that are English and Korean. I am elated to seize this unique opportunity which will expand my valid education and build new chances for my future career. I am incredibly interested in going to America because of its multicultural environment, wide range of services to find a job and friendly society. As I always planned to spend some time abroad during my studies, I started to investigate “Work and travel” programme from my university time. I am eager to get insight into American culture, learn new perspectives, get experienced and exchange ideas with different people all over the world whom I will meet there. The reason is it is important for me to understand cross-cultural differences and improve international communicative skills. Therefore, I passed exam to enter South Kazakhstan University from my hometown Tashkent in Uzbekistan. Now, it is my aim to go abroad, exactly to America. I am sure that I will get the best experiences as I am foreign student here and have such a life of foreigner. However, going to America by this programme is another degree of exchanging thoughts and changing mindset as well as for me and future generation that I will teach and lead to be open to the world. Therefore, I participate constructively in all the studies and meetings with foreigners in Kazakhstan. This is the second reason that motivates me and helps to keep my eyes on this opportunity. As I am following this programme, I know that I can trust you entirely for all the process and even results of your work. I know that you do your best from the contacting with candidates till their coming back to the country. You give teaching lessons, stay connected with both sides candidates and employers during all the period. You do the arrangements and help applicants during all the stages of accomplishment of it. Therefore, over 4,000 people believe you and can rely on you to be with you in the pass of becoming practiced during 10 years from the foundation day. I am confident to have an excellent command of English-speaking people which would enable me to get on well and adjust easily. As my first experience as a foreign student was back in the autumn of 2019, I can admit that I am sociable, hard-working, reliable, self-assured, and open-minded. Such characters of my nature helped and still does to become the best of me no matter where I am. I can get on well with easy in new environment and make a lot of friends not only where I live but also with foreigners both in online and face-to-face meetings. It would be a pleasure and an honour to represent my home university and my country during three months at the America. I hope using this chance to go abroad and exchange with culture. I am sure that I will stay connected with people from America even my back to the country that will help to increase multicultural connection of our country. There are many people who come to the America from all over the world and staying in connection with them will enable me to open my own center that will help our future generation go to work or study not only to America but also to other countries constantly. Introduction. The story will be told from the perspective of 2 people. Let's meet: Emil and Vladimir. Our dream of going to America finally came true. Before this, it didn't work out due to COVID. This year was also under threat because the embassy in Moscow closed due to politics. Chapter 1. The Beginning One sunny June day, we were informed that there was an opportunity to get a visa in Mexico. Without thinking for a second, each of us agreed. And so, on July 3rd, our group of about 30 people met at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. I (Emil) flew to Moscow alone. We started getting to know each other and chatting at the airport. We successfully arrived in Mexico, in the resort city of Cancun. We were organized a transfer to a hotel that was a 5-minute walk from the Caribbean Sea. We ended up having a mini-vacation as well. After hanging out in Cancun for a couple of days, we flew to Mexico City. A very beautiful and large city. We stayed 10 minutes away from the US Embassy. We walked around the city, explored the sights, and brushed up on our Spanish. In parallel, we prepared for the interview. On July 7th, the first batch of people went to get their visas, and I (Emil) was in it. I stood in line for the consul, maximally focused, with a cool head. I approached the window, smiled, and said hello, and the dialogue began. He asked me 3 questions, and I answered them all in detail. I heard the coveted phrase: "Your visa is approved. Have a nice summer!". I was happy at that moment, realizing that years of waiting and the risks with Mexico were not in vain, onward to the dream! Out of our group of 30 people, every single one received a visa. In the evening, we went to celebrate our success. Chapter 2. America It so happened that I (Emil) flew to America alone, having found a good ticket. Vladimir and 2 other girls arrived the same day, just in the evening. My flight was Mexico City-Cancun-Denver. I landed at Denver airport, surrounded by Americans, everyone speaking English. I arrived alone to conquer America (ha-ha). I asked the locals how best to get to the city, took a train, and went. I got off at Union Station, near downtown. I flew with one backpack without suitcases, so I was traveling light. And so I was walking through the city center, looking around, and just smiling. But I wasn't walking for no reason; I was looking for accommodation options because our employer, Elitch Gardens, did not provide us with housing. We were very unlucky with the date because the MLB All-Star Game was taking place during those days, and all motels and hostels were booked. I walked through the entire center, called all possible options, but couldn't find anything. Evening came, and Vladimir and the girls arrived (from this moment on, the narrative will be from 2 people). Together we thought about what to do. We seriously considered staying overnight in a church with local homeless people, but the girls didn't want to. We went to a park, thinking maybe someone would offer us something, but they were closed, there weren't even guards. In the end, we found a motel, but all the rooms were taken. We agreed that they would give us a room, perhaps it was a staff room, and gave her cash. The next day we went to get settled at Elitch Gardens. We asked them about housing, but their options were all sold out. We left the park feeling sad. My supervisor, Ricardo, caught up with us. He found a motel for the first time, paid for it for us, and we agreed to pay him back after payday. Happy, we moved into the motel. At the entrance, we met a local named Caesar, chatted with him, and went for a walk, already without him. That day, four other guys from Russia were supposed to arrive. We met them at the station and went to sleep, 8 people in a 4-person room. Tight but cozy. Of course, for those who consciously go to America to earn and spend all their money, for example, on education in Europe, or to save for future expenses in their hometown, travel is not on the list of mandatory things. But you should definitely visit at least a couple of states or at least cities. In the modern world, it is not that difficult. Everyone and everything is mobile. There are wonderful resources like couchsurfing that allow you to live for a short number of days as a guest of a resident of a city ABSOLUTELY FREE. Kind and open people are always ready to host students, tell them about their city, and ask about your traditions. This is a huge cultural exchange that, unfortunately or fortunately, you cannot buy with money. This is what it means to immerse yourself in the culture of a country: to see how the locals live. Undoubtedly, this summer changed my consciousness incredibly! This was especially noticeable when, at the end of the summer, we took a tour of the West Coast together with dozens of other guys. They were all interesting in their own way, and most importantly, we were all united by one common feeling of unity and cohesion. We were able to spend almost half a year in a foreign country, we did not back down in the face of difficulties, and now we are getting our well-deserved rest. Ksyusha and I are still in touch with many of the guys, thanks to the huge number of wonderful social networks that allow us to stay in touch from a distance. Honestly, I miss those emotions, people, and the atmosphere incredibly much. I am so drawn back. After all, you cannot get a complete picture of this colorful, incredibly diverse country in one trip. It all started within the state of Virginia, but the vastness of this state was not enough for us, and we flew to the West Coast: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and their suburbs. Then we decided to bask in the white sand of sunny Miami Beach. And like standard J-1 students, we spent our last days in America in a huge metropolis that many confuse with the capital of America, New York. And now, looking back at my summer of 2015, I cannot believe that I, a small student from Moscow, was able to, I am not afraid to say this, conquer America! And if I am asked what I would trade my trip for, my answer will be unambiguous: "I would never, for anything in the world, trade such an experience for anything!" This is something unique, unrepeatable, something that radically changes consciousness, breaking the system of stereotypes, revealing all your best qualities, which increase exponentially every day. Dear reader, You are very welcome on this page about my journey. My name is Polina, and I would like to express my interest in applying for the “Work and Travel” program. I am 20 years old and I’m also a 4th-year student of the Faculty of Social and Humanitarian Relations of the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University. To be honest when I was a first-year student I was thinking about a lot of programs for young people, student exchange programs and so on. I like the idea of studying, working, and living abroad, because what could be more valuable than having one's own experience. No matter how many times you've heard it, it's better to try it yourself once. I have the same story with international exchange programs. I have heard about them many times, but I have never tried them. But in my story, I have not yet tried similar programs on my own experience, because then there was Covid, I returned home again, started working on-line. Time moves very fast, and I really tried to keep up, but then the war started and I, as many Ukrainians, lost myself in all these information and disinformation, forgot to count months. So, now here I am studying in the 4th year, without ever having gone to study or travel abroad as a student. Life seems to flow through the fingers. But let's not be upset! What do I know about the programs? When I was a student at school, I heard a lot about various foreign programs for students. For example, my older cousin went abroad to work and travel by herself, so I was sure that I would do the same. Also, my relatives often talked about international programs, namely that when I enter the university, I should not miss the opportunity to apply for such a program. I am sure that everything has its time, so here I am. I would love to become part of your program because this is the best way for me become independent and find myself. I am especially interested in your organize because this is the way to know yourself. I read a lot, learned about the program “Work and Travel” and most of the participants say that it was in the United States of America that they found themselves. Of course, everyone told that it was difficult, a lot of work, you are left alone in an unfamiliar society, and there is a lot of new and unknown things. I can't make any excuses, because I've never participated, but the reviews inspire me to try and believe that I will succeed. you challenge yourself, try new things and rise like a phoenix from the ashes. So as you can tell from this program I expect challenges for myself, which is quite strange, but I feel like I have to live it. So, of course, I expect new impressions, new sensations and experiments from the program, I want to try to work abroad, feel the atmosphere of life in the United States of America. Probably everyone has dreamed of the so-called "American Dream" at some point in their lives, so this is a great chance to try it. Regarding work, it is quite diverse and you can definitely find something to your liking, there is also an advantage in that we ourselves choose the state where we will live and work. Also regarding housing, this program is a unique opportunity to live abroad, alone, with all the possibilities and negativity, but it is a priceless experience. All people are different and we all see the world in our own way, but now there is a war in our country and we live every day as our last, so we cannot let the world forget about us.
