Residents crossing north of Chang Phueak Gate stop here to seek stability before opening new businesses or taking new posts.
The temple stands outside the historic northern gate of the walled city. Its name translates as the enduring settlement, reflecting an ancient belief in continuous territorial protection. Monarchs traditionally visited the principal Buddha image before coronations to ensure their kingdom remained stable throughout their rule.
Historical chronicles record the site as a temple of longevity and the historic seat of the supreme patriarch Phra Abhaya Sarda. Together with Wat Chiang Man, it formed an auspicious paired foundation under King Mangrai. King Kawila later rebuilt the structures after a period of abandonment under Burmese regional governance.
The main shrine houses the revered Phra Sapphanyu Chao statue, where neighbourhood residents continue royal customs by seeking blessings for new commercial ventures and professional postings. Life around the northern perimeter remains quieter than inside the moat, giving long-term residents a peaceful retreat away from dense tourist footpaths.
