About the place

Las Ventas is the largest bullring in Spain and remains an active arena in Madrid.

The arena stands in the Guindalera quarter of the Salamanca district. It was designed by architect José Espeliú to replace the older Fuente del Berro facility after matador Joselito argued for a larger civic venue. The Jardón family provided the plot to the provincial council in exchange for several decades of operational rights.

Bullfighting halted during the Spanish Civil War, when authorities repurposed the structure as a detention facility and concentration camp. Regular events resumed following the end of the conflict. The arena inspired musical works, including a dedicated pasodoble by Maestro Manuel Lillo, and continues active seasonal operations.
